The M25 flyover was built as an incomplete stub as early as 1982, when the motorway first arrived in these parts, but wasn't put into use until the first part of the Dagenham to Aveley section was completed in 1998. The D2 flyover at the M25 junction (J30). west of here there is a lane-drop from D3, east of here a brief lane-gain, then a drop for the A126 Lakeside Thurrock exit, then it widens back out to D3 after some hatching. This interchange was open in 1982, with the flyover as an incomplete stub. Therefore it was out of use for seventeen years until the new section west to Dagenham was built! Traffic heading west had to turn off here and head down to J31 to pick up what is now the A1306, and vice versa. The bridge carrying the A126 over the A13. The A126 is the access to Lakeside shopping centre, continuing southwards into Thurrock and Grays. However there is no access eastbound onto the A13 and there is no exit westbound from the A13. The A13 here is D2, then gains a lane just east of this junction. One of the bridges carrying the A1012 roundabout above the A13. View from London to Southend coach. The next junction is the A1089 trumpet junction. The A1089 heads south towards Tilbury Docks, D2 for much of its length. The A13 ceases to be a formal trunk road here, the A1089 taking over the baton down to the docks. The A1261 Totso's here westbound to provide yet another access to Canary Wharf, then merges with the A1206 and finally rejoins the A13, but there are several sets of lights. To avoid these, continue straight on via the A1203 Limehouse Link tunnel. Opened in 1993, it's 1.8km, D2, and ends up at Limehouse and onto The Highway, which provides a reasonably fast S4 route westward to Tower Bridge. The residential access from Noel Road runs as far as the eastbound off-slip for the A117. This D3 effort first opened in March 2003, albeit with only 1 lane each way, but was fully operational by the following August. It replaced a rickety S2 flyover above a roundabout. Movers Lane heads north to Barking, while River Road heads towards the housing and industrial estates at Creekmouth, on the Thames. The tunnel link to the A13 was open in both directions only in December 2003. In 1995, the westbound bore was opened as a link from the A13 to the westbound carriageway of Aspen Way, with the eastbound out of use (along with the gantry!). Then for much of 2003 it was shut while the junction at the eastern end was remodelled to provide direct free-flow access between the two dual carriageways. However because of the upgrade of Canning Town flyover to six lanes, and the consequent lane-closures, the eastbound was single-file until October 2004. Canary Wharf Tower lies just south of Aspen Way. This shot was taken from the Docklands Light Rail near Poplar, just to the north of the road. HSBC Tower to the left, with Citigroup out of shot to the south of that. This is the only at-grade junction between Limehouse and Barking westbound, and heading eastbound, this is the only stop between Limehouse and Sadlers Hall Farm junction with the A130 in deepest Essex!. A similar view is shown in the A1203 Limehouse Link section, but this is where the A1261 Totso's to merge with the A1206 and then the A13, leaving traffic to head west through the tunnel. Canning Town should also be signposted at this turn-off, because there is no way of getting to that roundabout once you commit to the tunnel! As soon as you exit the tunnel westbound, you're faced with this gantry sign on approach to the next junction, the A1206 Prestons Road roundabout. This relatively short stretch of D4 does entail a degree of weaving, as the Prestons Road flyover is only D2. East India DLR station is just behind the gantry to the south of the A1261. Leamouth Roundabout was the original eastern terminus of the A1261. To the east, the A1020 Lower Lea Crossing (D2) soars over the River Lea to a junction with the A1011 south of Canning Town, while visible left centre in this shot is the short link northward to the A13, Leamouth Road, also D2. This point also defines the eastern limit of Transport for London's responsibility for maintaining the A13 (contracted out by DBFO to RMS Ltd. until c.2030). Between here and the A1089 junction, the Highways Agency are responsible for maintenance. These are I believe for a weigh-bridge, but only seen them switched on a very few occassions. This is the northern roundabout. The A1306 to the north-west is signposted Rainham Wennington A1306, Aveley (B1335). It has a wide but brief central reservation dating from pre-new alignment days.
